Seit den Anfängen der englischen Shakespearekritik im späten 17. Jahrhundert wird das ursprüngliche Publikum des Dramatikers zur Interpretation seines Werks herangezogen. Über weite Strecken erklären die Theaterbesucher der englischen Renaissance zunächst das, was man für die "Schwächen" der Stücke hält. Argumentiert wird allerdings auch dahingehend, dass gerade die besondere Qualität der Dramen auf ihren Einfluss zurückzuführen sei. In beiden Fällen werden überaus unterschiedliche Vorstellungen von Zusammensetzung und Eigenart dieses Publikums vertreten - angesichts der schlechten Quellenlage kein Wunder. Die Studie zeigt auf, dass die jeweils vertretenen Vorstellungen von den elisabethanischen Theaterbesuchern wenn überhaupt, dann nur in einem äußerst mittelbaren Verhältnis zu den verfügbaren historischen Zeugnissen stehen. Vielmehr besteht ein direkter Zusammenhang zwischen dem gerade aktuellen Shakespearebild und dem von dessen ursprünglichen Publikum. Diejenigen Elemente des Werkes, die eine bestimmte Phase der Rezeptionsgeschichte als erklärungs- und/oder entschuldigungsbedürftig wahrnimmt, werden auf den Einfluss der elisabethanischen Zuschauer zurückgeführt. Da diese Elemente jedoch nicht für alle Epochen dieselben sind, wandelt sich entsprechend auch das Bild von den frühneuzeitlichen Theaterbesuchern. Die Untersuchung zeichnet diesen Wandel von den Anfängen bis in unsere eigene Gegenwart hinein nach und weist auf, wie ihn Entwicklungen in der Shakespearekritik und -forschung, aber auch größere gesamtkulturelle Zusammenhänge beeinflussen.

The thirteen essays collected in ‘This Earthly Stage’ explore intersections between the world as stage and the stage as world in late medieval and early modern England. The volume features studies of stages both familiar and unfamiliar, and worlds old and new - from the ritual performance of funerals for the fifteenth-century London elite to the electronic recreation of Shakespeare on the Internet. The essays engage with a variety of scholarly fields, including art and iconography, cultural and social history, digital humanities, literature, myth, philology, and philosophy. Most studies examine performative elements of Shakespeare’s works in relation to a representative selection of other plays from the dramatic genres in which he wrote, while they also analyse broader topics which traverse a number of plays, such as kingship and rites of civic performance in relation to stage drama. All of the essays consider the overarching issue of representation in late medieval and early modern English drama and culture through a range of theoretical approaches. This volume offers a valuable contribution to contemporary medieval and early modern scholarship, with a particular interest for those researching and teaching early modern English drama and culture.

Early Modern Playhouse Manuscripts and the Editing of Shakespeare argues for editing Shakespeare's plays in a new way, without pretending to distinguish authorial from theatrical versions. Drawing on the work of the influential scholars A. W. Pollard and W. W. Greg, Werstine tackles the difficult issues surrounding 'foul papers' and 'promptbooks' to redefine these fundamental categories of current Shakespeare editing. In an extensive and detailed analysis, this book offers insight into the methods of theatrical personnel and a reconstruction of backstage practices in playhouses of Shakespeare's time. The book also includes a detailed analysis of nineteen manuscripts and three quartos marked up for performance - documents that together provide precious insight into how plays were put into production. Using these surviving manuscripts as a framework, Werstine goes on to explore editorial choices about what to give today's readers as 'Shakespeare'.

While film adaptations of Shakespeare's plays captured the popular imagination at the turn of the last century, independent filmmakers began to adapt the plays of Shakespeare's contemporaries. The roots of their films in European avant-garde cinema and the plays' politically subversive, sexually transgressive and violent subject matter challenge Shakespeare's cultural dominance and the conventions of mainstream cinema. In Screening Early Modern Drama, Pascale Aebischer shows how director Derek Jarman constructed an alternative, dissident, approach to filming literary heritage in his 'queer' Caravaggio and Edward II, providing models for subsequent filmmakers such as Mike Figgis, Peter Greenaway, Alex Cox and Sarah Harding. Aebischer explains how the advent of digital video has led to an explosion in low-budget screen versions of early modern drama. The only comprehensive analysis of early modern drama on screen to date, this groundbreaking study also includes an extensive annotated filmography listing forty-eight surviving adaptations.
